Emergency Preparation of Safe Drinking Water
Water must be purified when only unclean water is available or if there is reason to believe that available drinking water has become contaminated. One of the following methods may be used: (1) Strain water through a clean cloth and boil water vigorously for 30 minutes. (2) Add three drops of alcoholic solution of iodine to each quart (approx. 1 liter) of water. Mix well and let it stand for 30 minutes prior to using. (3) Add either 10 drops of 1% chlorine bleach, or 2 drops of 4% to 6% chlorine bleach, or 1 crop of 7% to 10% chlorine bleach to each quart (liter) of water. Mix well and let stand for 30 minutes. If the water is cloudy to begin with, use double the amount of chlorine. |
